Job Summary

Reel FX Creative Studios, the award winning animation studio behind The Book of Life, is expanding its creative reach to include its newest office in Montreal. Recruitment for all of our projects, including the new animated feature Ugly Dolls directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Desperado, Spy Kids), is in progress with openings in the new Montreal location.

Based in Dallas for over 20 years, we’ve collaborated with Warner Bros, Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Illumination and Google among others, with a passion for excellence on every project. From short film, branded content, ride film, or full length animated feature work, the team is constantly pushing for advancements in creativity, style, and process. Studio offices are in LA, Montreal and Dallas.

The Surfacing Artist is responsible for the creation and application of textures for use in the production of live-action and fully CG images. The Surfacing Artist is also responsible for collaborating with the Lighting, Shading and Look Development Artists to create a variety of textural looks and styles. Surfacing artist positions starting as early as November 2017 in Montreal.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Paint maps and images for surfacing department
• Create efficient UV layouts
• Create and maintain desired surface look and feel for characters, props and environments with direction from the Production Designer and/or Art Director
• Handle complex and technically challenging surfacing setups
• Work with other departments to communicate surfacing needs and provide for other departments’ needs

Education and Experience Requirements

Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience
• 4 years minimum experience in Feature Film, Commercial and/or Video Game production
• Experience with Maya and Arnold or similar render packages
• Good artistic eye for detail with ability to match art reference
• Familiarity with polygonal surfacing and UV layout
• Extensive experience in Mari or similar 3D painting package
• Flexibility to work within the complexity of our pipeline
• Familiarity with construction of complex shader networks. Ability to debug complex shader networks
• Ability to solve problems independently and take initiative
• Ability to work well in a team setting
• Able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
• Able to multi-task and prioritize
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Able to follow directions well
