Job Summary

Reel FX Creative Studios, the award winning animation studio behind The Book of Life, is expanding its creative reach to include its newest office in Montreal. Recruitment for all of our projects, including the new animated feature Ugly Dolls directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Desperado, Spy Kids), is in progress with openings in the new Montreal location.

Based in Dallas for over 20 years, we’ve collaborated with Warner Bros, Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Illumination and Google among others, with a passion for excellence on every project. The sequence lead is a key member of the show that is responsible for managing sequences and those artists assigned to their sequences, being a part of the leadership team that drives the quality and style of the show and partnering with the Animation Supervisor to achieve these goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Able to manage sequences and continuity of sequences
• Help Animation director to guide animation of sequences by attending rounds with AD, working with artists assigned to a particular sequence including managing their time and quota (keeping them on schedule)
• Assisting the AS in accomplishing the style and quality of the animation of the film
• Managing what is shown to the AS during rounds
• Helping with animation process (draw overs, trouble-shooting shots)
• Be on the same page as the animation supervisor to be able to give final approval of a shot in their assigned sequence if director and animation supervisor are addressed.
• Monitor shots as they roll from department to department
• Contribute to quota as assigned from the APM
• Able to set the tone in a sequence for the desired level of animation by completing key shots within the sequence
• Be involved in the casting and bidding sessions with AS and APM
• Liaison between APM and the animators ; responsible for the day to day management of the artists working on their assigned sequence
• Have a working knowledge of the current pipeline and how the animation process impacts surrounding departments.
• Responsible for effectively communicating any applicable changes within the animation department that will have impacts to surrounding departments.
• Provide training ideas and lectures to the team
• Help grow the team creatively and technically
• Be a positive leader and role model for the rest of the artists on the team and help set the tone for the morale of the department
• Assign mentor and mentorship responsibilities for new employees as they roll onto the project and their sequence team

Education and Experience Requirements

• Senior level in animation, character animation, lip synching. and lighting
• Solid knowledge of high end 3D software (Maya)
• Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience and 3 years animation experience
• Demonstrated ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
• Excellent multi-tasking and prioritization skills
• A creative and collaborative problem solver who is organized and critical of his or her own work.
• Demonstrable ability to train and has natural leadership qualities
