Job Summary

Reel FX Creative Studios, the award winning animation studio behind The Book of Life, is expanding its creative reach to include its newest office in Montreal. Recruitment for all of our projects, including the new animated feature Ugly Dolls directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Desperado, Spy Kids), is in progress with openings in the new Montreal location.

Studio offices are in LA, Montreal and Dallas.

Under general supervision of the Lighting Supervisor this position is responsible for creating and fine-tuning lighting and shadows for assigned shots, rendering layers, and compositing those layers to create the final image. Lighting and Compositing artist positions starting as early as May 2018 in Montreal.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Light production shots as required by lighting quota and Supervisor and perform technical work in support of shot lighting using a variety of tools.
• Partner with Director, Lead Lighter/Compositor and other staff in order to understand mood, time of day and color of the composition.
• Follow the creative direction of the production from an lighting standpoint as communicated by the Supervisor.
• Identify to the Supervisor problems that lighting could potentially present with respect to timelines and delivery schedules.
• Performing compositing operations with the rendered layers created, including overall look and feel, color correction, extractions, rotoscoping, and other compositing effects as needed.
• Maintain high quality and productivity throughout projects.
• Ensure consistent look between shots.
• Remain current and up-to-date in lighting techniques.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Degree/diploma in fine arts or equivalent experience
• Thorough knowledge of high end 3D software, Maya
• Thorough knowledge of high end Rendering software Mental Ray, Renderman
• 2 years experience as a Lighting and Compositing Artist
• Strong demonstration of composition, lighting and color
• Thorough knowledge of node based compositing systems
• Demonstrable ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
• A creative and collaborative problem solver who is organized and critical of his or her own work
• Demonstrable ability to multi-task and prioritize
• Able to thrive in a high pressure, deadline oriented environment
• Enjoy working in teams
• Able to follow directions well
