Job Summary

Reel FX Creative Studios, the award winning animation studio behind The Book of Life, is expanding its creative reach to include its newest office in Montreal. Recruitment for all of our projects, including the new animated feature Ugly Dolls directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Desperado, Spy Kids), is in progress with openings in the new Montreal location.

Based in Dallas for over 20 years, we’ve collaborated with Warner Bros, Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Illumination and Google among others, with a passion for excellence on every project. From short film, branded content, ride film, or full length animated feature work, the team is constantly pushing for advancements in creativity, style, and process. Studio offices are in LA, Montreal and Dallas.

CFX artists work with the CFX Supervisors and leads to create and execute the Director’s vision of fur and cloth on the production. CFX positions start as early as November 2017 in Montreal.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Run realistic and stylized Cloth shot simulations in a production environment
• Develop complex garments for use in shot work
• Develop and create new tools for the pipeline and shot artists
• Performs corrective shapes and sculpting fixes for cloth simulation in shot
• Rendering cloth elements
• Handles hero level work and the most complicated grooms
• Discovers new techniques to achieve direction in the most efficient and flexible way and shares them with the team
• Works well with team members in an advisory role and can show them process and troubleshooting

Technical Qualifications Cloth:
• Solid Knowledge of: Maya, (nCloth, nHair, deformers, rigging)
• Solid Knowledge of: Mel, Python, Physics of motion and timing, Cloth/Hair motion and tailoring
• Experience with multiple types of cloth solvers such as Syflex, Qualoth, or proprietary

Technical Qualifications Fur:
• Mastery of current groom systems and techniques and strong understanding of fur shading
• Solid Knowledge of: Maya, (xGen) or other grooming packages.
• Expert understanding of the current fur tools and is able to perform advanced troubleshooting
• Able to develop and maintain all department documentation of current pipeline and techniques
• Ability to advance towards asset approval of their groom without daily supervision

Education and Experience Requirements

• 3 years of experience in film/animation/vfx
• Degree/diploma in fine arts/computer science or equivalent experience
• Able to multitask and prioritize
• Able to work in a team based structure
• Able to follow directions well
• Able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas. Able to take constructive feedback form direct supervisor, department supervisor
• Able to work independently on shots with little guidance
• Demo reel demonstrating abilities with shot breakdown
