The Insight team at Reel FX maintains a suite of internal studio-management software called “Insight”. Our tools are mostly web based and cover a wide range of studio operations. We exist to support the artists working in Reel FX’s feature-film production pipeline and the studio in general by creating software to help people do their jobs better. We are looking for developers to join our team and help us write these tools.

We work primarily in open source technologies. We have a large existing codebase that needs maintenance (patches, framework upgrades, etc…). In addition, the studio has a large wish-list of new tools for us to develop. We don’t really have specialists on our team so everyone is expected (and gets the opportunity) to do both of these things. This usually looks something like the following:

• Design, implement, and test new software tools for the production pipeline
• Support artist and production management with day-to-day problem solving
• Communicate directly with team members to gather requirements, collect feedback, and provide support
• Collaborate on projects in small teams of 1-3 people
• Research industry technologies and maintain a robust, distributed software infrastructure

The ideal candidate will have had experience (or is very interested) in writing web based applications. This means you know your way around HTTP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Knowledge or experience in using open source MVC web development frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, Django, CakePHP, etc… is a plus. We deploy a set of distributed applications (both web and backend services). We use Ruby for our backend and mostly JQuery/Backbone/SASS for the frontend UI on our webapps.

This position requires a good understanding of software engineering fundamentals such as object-oriented design/modeling, test-driven development, etc. You should have a strong problem-solving mentality meaning you need to be able to take large complex problems and break them down into many small easy problems. You should be willing to work on a small, agile, highly-opinionated team.

Here are some things we are looking for:

• Code: show us your code. We all have Github accounts and actively contribute code to the open-source community. We’d love to see yours.
• Experience: we don’t care about a formal degree, per-se, but you should have some education or equivalent experience with web technologies. We’d love to chat about it.
• Work in Dallas: we all work on-site at our Dallas (Deep Ellum) facility. We’d need you here with us.
